However, the industry is not without its drawbacks, with reports of commercial ‘ghost surgeries’ and ‘factory plastic surgeries’ clouding its reputation. While it’s important not to overlook the dark side, it’s equally crucial not to dismiss the bright side because of it.

Indeed, plastic surgery has become so common in Korea, that most people are likely to have considered or undergone a procedure at least once. You might think you’re well-versed in plastic surgery, but facial contouring surgery is more complex than eye or nose surgeries, as it fundamentally alters bone structures to reshape the face.

Trends in facial contouring surgery have evolved over time. Until the 2000s, the aim was to remove as much bone as possible for maximum effect, even if the surgical changes were evident. But in the 2010s, the focus shifted towards preserving enough bone structure to enhance facial uniqueness rather than drastically altering by removing significant bone quantities.

The trend now emphasizes harmony among facial features like the eyes, nose, mouth and so on. While the trends may evolve in the coming 10 to 20 years, the basic concept of facial harmony and functional stability won’t change. As surgeons, it is our responsibility to follow and create emerging trends while preserving these basic concepts through continuous academic practices. This balance is crucial to maximize patient satisfaction and align with the proper direction of plastic surgery.
